James Madison papers, 1792-1970s.

Two manuscripts by Bishop Madison; a testimonial for the Reverend James Whitehead, 1805, and a letter to the Reverend William L. Gibson concerning St. Paul's Church, Alexandria, Va., 1810; together with other papers relating to Madison's episcopate, affairs of the Episcopal Church in Virginia, clerical matters, and comments of others on the bishop's character and activities, particularly a denunciation of Madison by the Reverend Joseph G. J. Bend, of Baltimore, 1812, and some describing the state of the diocese before and after his death. Madison's signature also appears on Bishop Thomas John Claggett's certificate of consecration as Bishop of Maryland, 1792.
